WYNTER 2ND F.F.), Africa General Service Medal 1902 with clasps 'Jidballi' and 'Somaliland 1902-04' (CAPT. C.P. WYNTER 52ND SIKHS), 1914-15 Star (LT. COL. C.P. WYNTER 52/SIKHS F.F.), 1914-1918 British War Medal and Victory Medal with oak leaf device (LT.COL C.P. WYNTER), General Service Medal 1918 with clasps 'Iraq' and 'Kurdistan' (LT. COL. C.P. WYNTER), mounted as worn together with miniature medal bar with the same awards, two medal ribbon bars and a framed photograph of Colonel Winters in uniform, Charles Phillip Wynter was born on 12th July 1869 ands commissioned into the Suffolk Regiment on 17th January 1891, he attended the Indian Staff College as a Lieutenant in September 1893 and was promoted Captain in the Indian Army on 10th July 1901 joining the 2nd (Hill) Sikhs (this regiment was redesignated 52nd Sikhs, Frontier Force, in 1903), Colonel Wynter is shown on operations North West Frontier 1897-98, and in Somaliland 1903-04 where the regiment was engaged in numerous skirmishes and culminated in the Battle of Jidballi, Wynter was Second in Command and double company commander 52nd Sikhs November 1914, the regiment remained in India on the outbreak of WW1 and served on operations in the Tochi Valley between November 1914 and March 1915, where Wynter was Mentioned in Despatches for gallantry, including at the battle of Spina Khairosa, the 52nd Sikhs served on the N.W. Frontier until December 1917 with Wynter becoming Commanding Officer in 1916, the regiment was then posted to Mesopotamia to serve with 54th Indian Infantry Brigade, 18th Indian Division, the regiment saw limited action before the war ended but Wynters was involved in a number of skirmishes, notably when the Gendarmes mutinied at Amadia, in July 1919 the regiment was posted to Kurdistan where Colonel Wynter was awarded the DSO for his actions at the ambush at Magurkha Gorge, Colonel Wynter was mentioned in despatches on no less then five occasions, in Somaliland, the North West Frontier, Mesopotamia and Waziristan, Colonel Wynter retired from the army in 1920.

SECOND WORLD WAR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS GROUPING. Second World War Distinguished Service Cross grouping, D.S.C. hallmarked London, 1942, stamped 'S.G.' for Garrard & Co Ltd, London, engraved '1941' to the reverse, 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, 1939-1945 British War Medal, Naval general Service Medal (1918) (LIEUT. G.D NUTT D.S.C. R.N.), Geoffrey Dyson Nutt was born on 3rd July 1916 at Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, he attended Hymers College in the East Riding of Yorkshire, on leaving he obtained his civilian Flying License with Hull Aero Club, he joined the Territorial Army as an officer being granted his commission in 1934, he later went on to join the Royal Navy in the Fleet Air Arm in 1938 and obtained his commission as Sub Lieutenant in 1940, trained as an Observer he served on the Aircraft Carrier HMS Glorious with 812 NAS (Naval Air Squadron), leaving the ship a few weeks before she was sunk with a huge loss in lives to join 767 NAS, a training squadron, he served with 767 Sqn. near Toulon in the South of France where it took on operational duties including a bombing raid on Genoa in Italy, with the fall of France the squadron evacuated to Algeria and was split, one part, including Nutt, going to Malta where it formed 830 NAS based at St. Angelo, the squadron carried out torpedo attacks on Italian merchant shipping and Italian Navy vessels, and bombing raids on port installations in Sicily and Libya, it was during one of these raids that the Swordfish aircraft on which Nutt was the Observer, was shot down at Zwara near Tripoli on 6th May 1941, he was captured, unwounded, along with the pilot Lt. N.K. Campbell, the Air Gunner, P.O. William Gracie Tennant died of wounds, a newspaper article at the time reads in part, '.. his parents have just received a letter from him in which he says his plane came down in the Mediterranean and after swimming and floating for some time he was washed ashore on a rocky part of the coast. He managed to escape without a scratch however, being protected from the rocks by his bulky flying kit. The Pilot was picked up the next morning little the worse, but the Air gunner was dead when found. Lieut. Nutt states that he was kindly treated when found by Italian soldiers..', Nutt was awarded the D.S.C. in the Birthday Honours List, London Gazette 1st July 1941, page 3745, his Prisoner of War Questionnaire filled out after he was liberated shows is POW number as 3292, after capture he was incarcerated at Camp 17, Rezzanello, Italy between 7/41-4/42, Camp 35 at Padula 4/42-7/43, Camp 19 at Bologna 7/43-9/43, Milag (Marine-Internierten Lager- Naval Internment Camp) & Marlag (Marinelager- Naval POW Camp), Marlag (O) Westertimke, Germany 10/43-4/45, Oflag 10c Lubeck 4/45-2/5/45, it also shows he was interrogated for two days at Tripoli after capture and that he made several escape attempts, 'Escaped with a large number of other officers at 0430 9th September 1943 when the Germans took over the camp at Bologna, Italy. The Italians after some hesitation opened a gate at the rear of the camp. I was recaptured in a wood at 1030 the same day.On 26th May 1944 I hid in one of a number of large cupboards which were being transported from my camp in Germany by lorry. Lorry searched at main gate and I was discovered. Second World War Distinguished Flying Medal group to Flight Lieutenant Ronald Gordon Elvin (121534) Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, to include, Distinguished Flying Cross, 1939-1945 Star, Air Crew Europe Star with clasp 'France and Germany', 1939-1945 British War Medal, held in a glazed display frame with original photo of Elvin (on right) and two others, Air Council medal issue slip named to 'Flight Lieutenant R.G. Elvin D.F.C.', letter from the Air Ministry to Mr F.G. Squadron (Defiants), sitting in the cockpit of a shot down Me 109, an RAF Funeral, photos at leisure, aerial reconnaissance photos of British sea port showing a sea plane base with Sunderland Flying Boats, etc, approx. 88 photos, the son of F.G. and Katherine Elvin, Ronald was born at Blunderston in 1921, he was educated at Kessingland High School and Lowestoft Technical and Art College, he joined the RAF as aircrew in 1939 and was commissioned in 1942, while serving with 151 Squadron based at RAF Colerne in Wiltshire on Mosquito NF Mk IIs Elvin and his pilot Pilot Officer Ronald Lucas were hit by severe flak over Northern France on the return journey from a night mission, with the starboard engine out of action and hydraulics damaged they were forced to 'belly' land at RAF Hurn in Dorset, on the night of 23rd December 1944 a Mosquito F.B VI Fighter Bomber, number HP930, of 613 (City of Manchester) Squadron based at Cambrai took off on a sortie to attack communications in the Cologne/Bonn/Duren/Coblenz area of Germany in support of operations against the Ardennes offensive (Battle of the Bulge), F/Lt Elvin was the Navigator and the pilot F/Lt Eric Raynor, the aircraft never returned and was believed to have been shot down by a German night fighter at around 2200 hours in the Hasselt area in Belgium and the crew killed, their bodies were never recovered, both men were awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (Supplement to the London Gazette, 29 December 1944), the citation for F/Lt Elvin reads in part '..has participated in six successful attacks against enemy airfields. Since the invasion of Western Europe he has also taken part in many missions in support of ground forces and in search of enemy transport after penetrating deeply inside enemy territory. During one sortie two trains were located one of which was set on fire and the engine of the other was blown up. Another time his aircraft was detailed to attack a heavily defended target. His skilful navigation and determination materially contributed to the destruction of a very large number of enemy vehicles. Flight Lieutenant Elvin's fortitude, initiative and courage are worthy of high commendation.', Ronald Elvin is commemorated at the Runnymede Memorial, Panel 202, a fine grouping to a gallant officer, when originally sold at auction the items came directly from the Elvin family, (qty).

CIVILIAN HEROISM GROUPING. Civilian heroism grouping, Bronze Carnegie Medal ( JOHN C. BUTCHER, SUDBURY, SUFFOLK, 19TH DECEMBER 1946), British Empire Medal (JOHN C. BUTCHER), Mr John Christopher Butcher of Sudbury in Suffolk was awarded both the British Empire Medal and Carnegie Medal for his bravery in attempting to save the life of a workmate after an explosion at the gravel pit in Nayland Road, Bures on 19th December 1946, Mr Butcher made repeated attempts to rescue John Smith from a steel pontoon on the Eastern Counties Sand and Ballast Quarry lake on which they had been working and which had had been engulfed by flames after an oxygen bottle exploded, Mr Butcher, who couldn't swim, had clung to the side of the pontoon to try and avoid the flames but on hearing the screams of Mr Smith had climbed back onto the boat and tried to pull him out of the flames, although he managed to grab him, he was eventually forced back, their hands had been fused together by the heat but he managed to rip his hand away and leap back into the water, Mr Smith unfortunately lost his life despite Mr Butchers gallant attempts to save him, Mr Butcher spent many years in and out of hospital undergoing thirty skin grafts due to his severe burns, he was unable to receive his BEM in person from the King as he was in hospital, instead, his wife Florence pinned the medal to his chest in his hospital bed, the Carnegie Medal is awarded to civilians who risk death or serious injury to an extraordinary degree saving or attempting to save the lives of others, the Chief Constable of Suffolk reported the facts to the Carnegie Hero Fund and Mr Butcher received the award, a gift of £75, his name was placed on the Illuminated Roll of Heroes, and a weekly sum of money until he was fit enough to return to work, also included in this lot is a framed photograph of Mr Butcher holding his Carnegie Medal, a crystal bowl engraved 'John C. Butcher, Carnegie Hero Fund 1946-1996' and a silver plated spoon from the Andrew Carnegie Birthplace Museum.
